OK, so Trump has declared a national emergency so that he
can get funding and person-power to build a wall on our southern border. I have been embroiled in debate all day with
my conservative friends, many of whom are likely to “unfriend” me as a result. My response has been consistent: Name a wall in human history that has worked. Define why this is a national emergency and
deaths to mass shootings and Puerto Rican hurricanes, measles outbreaks, etc.
are not. Explain how we can keep people
going over, under, around and through such a wall using Middle Ages
technology. And justify taking land away
from American citizens to build a wall they oppose and see no need to
have. Answer those questions and I will submit. No one has answered even one of them today. Though on the heels of Israel announcing how
many Hamas tunnels they have found, someone suggested that the Israeli wall on
the West Bank worked. Nope.
I am convinced that is part of Trump’s divergence from
reality and his attempt to pull us all into his dream world. During his campaign he learned that he hit a
chord with our immigration issues, and I do not know a single person (or a
married one for that matter) that doesn’t agree we must do something about our
policies and procedures. But he appealed
to those who love throw-down ideas by saying we should build a wall and have
Mexico pay for it. I assumed, silly me,
that upon even 5 minutes of reflection Americans would know this is a dumb
idea. I was wrong. Many still support constructing such a wall.
Clearly, Mexico would never pay for such a wall.
At least other nations have had the good sense to try using
a wall between them and their enemies.
Not Trump. He wants to build a
wall between us and an ally. Go figure.
He wants to declare an emergency and build a wall when we
are at a 20 year low of illegal immigrants entering our country.
He wants to declare an emergency and build a wall to stop
drugs flowing into our county when the drugs enter the country through our
ports and check points, not from folks swimming with them across the Rio
Grande.
He is bringing troops home from Syria and Afghanistan where
there is conflict going on and shooting wars to line them up on our southern
border where there is no conflict.
All I can figure is that today we are celebrating President
Daze because Trump has no rationale for any of this. Drones can carry people over the walls, as
can ladders. Even after the wall is
built, if it is built, entry into this country around the entire Gulf of
Mexico, the entire Eastern Seaboard, the northern boundary with Canada and the
entire West Coast will remain open.
And I have not even ventured into the humanitarian argument
that the US of A has always stood to defend those who are persecuted in their
homeland. That is what leads some to
declare this wall immoral. I think those
people are thinking clearly and are not in a daze.
